Both. Our soul/spirit is saved. Our flesh, our old nature has to die because of sin, 

Our soul is the real you. Our spirit is made alive when we trust Jesus alone apart from works for the free gift of eternal life. 

We are made in the image of God. We have a soul, a spirit, and a body. We are born with a dead spirit. When we trust Jesus alone for the free gift of eternal life, we are born again. 

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, First Corinthians 15:3-4, in whom also AFTER ye believed, ye were sealed by that Holy Spirit of promise. Born again, born of God. 

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the POWER of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on Him that sent me, HATH EVERLASTING LIFE, (present tense) and shall not come into judgement, but is passed from death unto life. 

The blood of Jesus covers the believer from all sin. Colossians 2:13 We have been forgiven all trespasses. Romans 4:7-8 All our past, present, and future sins are paid in full and we can no longer be condemned. John 3:18.

Since we still have our old nature that did not get saved, we still all sin. First John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive our selves and the TRUTH is not in us. 

We all still sin, but the blood of Jesus covers us from all sin. We can not longer be condemned. John 3:18. 

We become a child of God by faith alone in Jesus finished work on the cross alone apart from any works. Romans 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on Him who justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for HIS righteousness. 

We have to be as righteous as God to go to heaven, and no one is. But when we trust Jesus alone for salvation by grace, He imputes His perfect righteousness to us. Romans 4:6

So, when we trust Jesus alone, He takes all of our sin, past, present and future sins, and gives us His perfect righteousness. 

IT is the only way we could have eternal life.

In Genesis 2:7, God forms Adam fully and then breathes into him life. He is not alive until the breath of God makes him so. This is the same breath that gives life to all the living. The word for breath and the word for spirit are the same.

The same verse says that God formed man from the dust of the ground. I'll suggest that he was formed, body and soul and that he needed the breath of God to energize him. In fact the King James Version renders this verse, man became a living soul.

At the risk of oversimplification, I'll suggest that, generally speaking, the Bible treats the soul as the distinctly human essence of man, while the spirit of man is given by God.

In John 3:5-8, Jesus tells Nicodemus that he, and by extension all people, must be born again if we are to participate in the Kingdom of God. This new birth is accomplished by the Spirit of God. Physical life by the Breath of God in Genesis, Spiritual life by the Spirit of God in John.

In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus is teaching a lesson about the value of the written Word of God to bring about faith over the power of miracles to produce faith. To do this, he tells a story about two men, one rich one poor. Both die and the immaterial part of each one, that is the soul/spirit, goes to reward or judgment.

There is no mention of separation of soul and spirit, it seems best to understand that the soul of each energized by the spirit of each is present.

Lazarus, goes to Abraham's side. This is the term for the place of the righteous dead, while the rich man goes to Hades, a place of torment for the unrighteous dead. 

In Hades, his soul, fallen and unredeemed by the Spirit of God, yet energized by his human spirit, continues to do in Hades what he did in this world. He seeks personal advantage, relief from torment, and exceptional treatment. Both his soul and spirit seem to be in play, the only thing missing is his body.

He is in, and so is Lazarus, what is known as the "intermediate state." The period between death and resurrection. It would seem that the soul and spirit of Lazarus also awaits resurrection. Thus, while the body goes into the ground, it seems the biblical teaching is that soul and spirit remain together. 

Unregenerate souls go immediately into torment, darkness, futility and hopelessness. Regenerate souls go immediately into glory, light, peace, joy, welcomed by angels, curious about our salvation no doubt. 1Pe 1:12

The Bible does not reveal to us whether it is the spirit or the soul that goes to heaven. 

But the Bible does reveal to us, that the spirit and the soul are one. 

It is recorded in Genesis 2:7: "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the earth, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being."

According to what the Holy Spirit has revealed to us in this passage; we are spirit beings, or living souls. As humans we are one entity; spirit, soul, and body. (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

In other words we are a three part being functioning as one. (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

In Psalm 103:1 the psalmist tells to his soul, 'Bless the Lord, o my soul....' In Luke 12:19 the rich man also tells to his soul, '....eat, drink and make merry...'

The previous one is telling his soul to glorify the spiritual entity of himself, whereas, the latter is telling his soul to glorify the physical entity of himself, which is the body or flesh. Here the common entity is the soul or life. 

Genesis 9:4 says the blood is life. Blood is the common entity which keeps the body and spirit intact, which situation we call as living. When the blood is inactive, the body and spirit are separated, which situation we call as dead. 

Ecclesiastes 12:7 records, 'The dust (body) shall return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.’ Hence, it is the spirit which will go to heaven or to hell, as the case may be.
