What does Jesus mean by, “Whosoever keeps his life shall lose it, and whosoever loses his life for My sake shall keep it”?
Luke 9:24
ESV - 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

Jesus said these words as He was warning the apostles about the opposition that they would encounter because of being His followers, and because of trying to convert others to following Him. This would result in their persecution, even to the point of imprisonment and death. Despite those temporal dangers, His followers were to place their allegiance and devotion to Him (as God incarnate) above any considerations of personal welfare or safety to accomplish the mission that He was assigning them. Any aspect of their lives that would cause them to shirk that level of commitment for the purpose of maintaining their own comfort or safety would result in loss of the eternal life that only God can grant. By contrast, those who would remain faithful to Him through any such adversities would gain eternal life in His presence, which was (and is) of more value than any comfort, pleasure, or benefit that temporal life on this earth can provide.
