Why did God allow Satan, as repugnant as he is, his request to inflict Job, and to increase the bodily infliction twice?
Job 1:12
ESV - 12 And the Lord said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand." So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

I would say that God allowed Satan to afflict Job because there was no other way to conclusively disprove Satan's allegations that Job (and, by extension, any follower of God) served God only from a selfish motivation of doing so to obtain God's temporal blessings -- both external (such as family and property) and internal (such as health and well-being). Those blessings had to be taken away to demonstrate that Job served God solely because God was worthy of such service (irrespective of whatever adversities might befall individuals during their finite lifetimes) because of the eternal blessings that He alone could bestow. (As Job said in Job 19:25-27, " I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end He will stand on the earth, and after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh will I see God. I myself will see Him with my own eyes -- I, and not another.")
