My understanding is that Jesus was born in late September early October.

From Luke 3:23 we know that Jesus was baptized around His 30th birthday. Although His exact birthday is not given, we know that His ministry lasted three and a half years from His baptism. If we count back three and a half years from when He died (Passover spring of 31 A.D.) we arrive at fall of the year 4 B.C.

Taking into account the additional clues from the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:5-24), Bible scholars also arrived at the same approximate date, the fall of 4 B.C.

Commentaries that I have read have suggested that Jesus was born in the spring. I understand that the primary bases for this view are, first, the fact mentioned by Luke of shepherds abiding in the field with their flocks by night at the time that Jesus was born, which apparently indicates that it would have been in the spring (the primary season when ewes give birth to lambs), so that the shepherds would be present to deal with any problems that might arise in that regard. I have also heard commentary from students of astronomy who suggest a "natural" explanation for the star that guided the Magi as being the result of a particularly notable conjunction of the visible planets that would have occurred at that time.

Jesus was most likely born in September or October 5 B.C., because Herod the Great died March/April, 4 BCE, Jericho, Judaea.
