In my opinion, Jesus was referring to events that would occur in the forthcoming (with respect to the time when Jesus spoke these words) destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in AD 70.

At that time, and in fulfillment of a prophecy made by Daniel (Daniel 9:27) hundreds of years earlier in the writings of what is today called the Old Testament, Roman armies would occupy Jerusalem (including the Temple Mount, with its buildings at which the apostles had marveled) carrying banners or standards bearing pagan or idolatrous images (thus desecrating the temple, as well as being an abomination with respect to the worship of God), and causing the cessation of the customary sacrificial offerings made in the temple, which would leave the temple's altar desolate.

In Matthew 24:3 the disciples ask Jesus two questions: 
1. When the destruction of the temple will take place 
2. What are the signs of His coming and the end of the age

To better understand this, Jesus tells them to think of Daniel 8:13: “How long will the vision be, concerning the daily sacrifices and the transgression of desolation, the giving of both the sanctuary and the host to be trampled underfoot?” (NKJV)

The first fulfillment of the desolation took place in AD 70 when the Romans destroyed the Jewish temple – Jesus talks about it in Luke 21:20-24. 

The final desolation spoken by Jesus is also mentioned by Daniel 8:13; 11:31; 12:11 and refers to the end of time rise of an evil religious power that will cause desolation in the Christian Church (God’s spiritual temple) by mixing pagan tradition with Christ's teachings. 

Just as Jesus warned the early Christians to flee Jerusalem, so, at the end of time, a similar warning is given to God's people (John 10:16) to come out of the corrupt church that is teachings false doctrines (Rev 18:4, 5).

Daniel 9:27 Matthew 24:15 It is when the anti Christ sets him self up in the temple during the 7 year tribulation period. It is the middle of the 7 year period. 

Matthew 24:4-5. The spirit of anti Christ has been in the world since the beginning. 

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you, For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

People who are deceived do not know they are deceived. If they knew they were deceived they would not be deceived. 

Every false religion in the world is the sprit of anti Christ. Satan comes as an angel of light. He wants everyone to go to hell with Him. 

So he makes up all kinds of false religions to deceive the world. 

If he can get people to believe a false way, then they may never believe the simplicity of the gospel and be saved. 

The gospel is First Corinthians 15:3-4 That Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures, that He was buried and rose again on the third day, according to the scriptures. 

The second we believe or trust in that gospel as the only way of salvation apart from any works. We are sealed by the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption. Ephesians 1:13-14 and Ephesians 4:30. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace ye are save, through FAITH, and that not of yourselves, it is the GIFT of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. You can not boast in free. 

Faith is not a work. Faith is that we believe that gospel. John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on Him who sent me, HATH EVERLASTING LIFE, and shall not come into judgment, but is passed from death unto life. 

All false ways require works. Our works can not save sinners. Only Jesus’ finished work on the cross plus nothing. 

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, and we all sin, First John 1:8, and we all die, but the GIFT of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. No one can earn it. All false gospels add works to grace. Romans 11:6.

Mark 13:14: But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Ju-dae’-a flee to the mountains.

The abomination of desolation as revealed to Daniel, Lord Jesus is revealing unto us that we need to “read and understand through the scriptures” that shall come to pass. The Mes-si’-ah shall be cut off, but not for Himself, that is, Lord Jesus, after being crucified, the people of the prince (Roman Empire) who came and destroyed the city and the sanctuary “temple.” For then in the latter days, you shall see that during the end times, there shall be a flood, and unto the end, the war of desolation is determined. (Dan 9:26-27/10:14/Luke 21:5-6) When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, nations will rise against nations, earthquakes in diverse places, and famines, which are the beginning of sorrows. For the elect’s sake whom He has chosen for the rapture, He hath shortened the days. (Mark 13:8,20/1 Thes 4:16-17) 

In the beginning, and until the end of the war, desolations which are determined; he who shall come, is when nations gather together (antichrist) shall confirm the covenant with many for one week, (Seven years). (Dan 7:25,9:27) Then shall the two witnesses come, who shall prophesy and testify of our Lord Jesus, up to the midst of the week. (Three years and six months) The antichrist shall then cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, for he shall make it desolate until the consummation and shall kill them. (Dan 9:27/Rev 11:3-7) The abomination of desolation, standing where it ought not, who shall then oppose and exalt himself above all, him to be worshipped that he is God, sitting in the temple of God. He shall do according to his will, exalting himself, magnifying himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against God of gods. (Dan 11:15,36/2 Thes 2:3-4)

The antichrist who shall then speak great words against the most High and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change the times and laws. For it shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time who shall enforce the mark of the beast. The mark of the beast shall be, “Six hundred threescore and six” (666), which is to receive on the right hand or in their forehead, which shall be to “buy or sell.” He shall perform great signs and wonders to deceive the elect, those who are possibly to be deceived. (Dan 9:25/Rev 13:16-18,16:2/Mat 24:24) For then shall the Wicked be revealed, the antichrist, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming. For His feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem. (2 Thes 2:8/Zech 14:4)

Zechariah 14:4: And His feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives, shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
