As far as I am aware, there was only one individual with that name mentioned in the New Testament. The first reference to him is in the passage from Acts noted in the question. His original name was Joseph, and he was a Jew from the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea. He was given the name Barnabas (meaning "son of encouragement" or "son of consolation") by the apostles after selling a field that he owned, and laying the proceeds at the apostles' feet. He later travelled extensively with Paul (whom he had brought to the apostles after Paul's conversion (Acts 9:27), and whom he later traveled to Tarsus several years later to call to missionary work (Acts 11:25-26)) on Paul's missionary journeys.
