Why are there two different Creation accounts in Genesis chapters 1-2?
Genesis 1:1 - 31
NKJV - 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

To me, the accounts in the two chapters cited in the question are not redundant or in conflict, but are complementary. I would say that Genesis 1 is meant to be an account or view of creation from a "macro" standpoint (encompassing the entire universe), whereas the information in Chapter 2 is a "micro" view of a portion of that creation (described in Genesis 1:26-30) dealing specifically with earth, and, even more specifically, with the creation of humans (male and female).
