My understanding is that the phrase "pieces of silver" would have been referring to the unit of currency known as a shekel, which (as far as I can determine) would have been worth less than a dollar in today's currency. The amount that was paid to Judas (thirty shekels) is referenced elsewhere in the Bible (Exodus 21:32) as the compensation paid by the owner of an ox to the owner of a slave who was killed as a result of being gored by the ox. It was also mentioned by Zechariah (Zechariah 11:4-14) in connection with a specific prophecy of the use of the money that was paid to Judas to buy the potter's field (as fulfilled in Matthew 27:6-8).
