In Revelation 11 we find the prophecy of two witnesses – I believe they represent the Bible Old and New Testaments.

The witnesses are pictured as prophesying in sackcloth during the prophetic period of 1260 days/years (AD 538-1798). Sackcloth represents mourning (Gen 37:34) and points to the difficult time when the Bible truth was buried and replaced by human traditions. For 1260 years the Bible was not available to the common people - it was available only in Hebrew, Greek and Latin, all religious services were done in Latin and in many European countries owning a Bible was a crime punished by death.

We know that a lamp (Rev 11:4) is a symbol for God’s Word (Ps 119:105; Zech 4:2-6).

This killing of the witnesses applies historically to the attack on the Bible and the abolition of religion during the French Revolution. During “The Reign of Terror” in France, the Bible was forbidden and publicly burned. For “three days and a half” (3.5 literal years) the Bible would appear to be dead.

The antireligious system established in France possessed the moral degradation of Sodom, Egypt represents atheism and Jerusalem rebellion against God (Rev 11:8). What happened to Jesus in Jerusalem now happens to the Bible in this period of time.

The resurrection of the witnesses (Rev 11:11-12) points to the revival the Bible after the French Revolution. The British Bible society, established in 1804, and the American Bible Society, established in 1816, began distributing large numbers of Bibles. God said, Isaiah 43:10, "You are My witnesses, says the Lord, and My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me. (Vs 11) I, even I, am the Lord, and besides Me there is no savior."

I see this verse in Revelation as a microcosm of the Bible. It's all about Jesus!
