What would the ephod represent spiritually if at all in the new testament and for us today?
Exodus 28:6 - 14
ESV - 6 And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and of fine twined linen, skillfully worked. 7 It shall have two shoulder pieces attached to its two edges, so that it may be joined together.

An ephod in the O.T. was a garment, perhaps like an apron, worn by the high priest. It had precious stones probably representing the 12 tribes. It also had a pouch for the Urim, and the Thummin. (Exodus chapters 28 & 31) In 1 Samuel 2:18, an ephod was worn that was made of linen when entering the sanctuary. David wore an ephod (that may have been like a skirt) when he danced before the ark in 2Samuel 6:14. Judges 2:2,3 - the Angel of the Lord said make no covenant and tear down altars of the inhabitants of the land, their God's shall become a snare to you. Judges 8, Gideon had an ephod made and placed in His own city of Ophrah. It became a snare to Gideon's house! After this incident, Judges 17 records Micah making a carved image also considered an ephod or a shrine. I think of Rachel's plunder of idols in Genesis 31:19. Also comes to mind is the golden calf in the book of Exodus. What is the first commandment? Thou shall have no other God's before me? So, what is the spiritual connection of an ephod in the New Testament? Let's hear the scriptures speak... Judges 21:25, "In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in His own eyes." Gee, that seems familiar! Matthew 6:24, "No one can serve two masters, for he will love one and hate the other, or else he will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." - Jesus Galatians 1:10, "For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ." - St. Paul Think how God must have felt in 1Samuel 21, "So the priest said, 'The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, there it is, wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod.' And David said, 'There is none like it, give it to me.'" Huh? Wait a minute, God used David and the sling shot to kill Goliath. David used the sword to cut off Goliath's head.. the power was God's, not David's!

In first Samuel the thirtieth chapter it reveals that David used the ephod to inquire of God. The ephod in this instance was used as a means to seek God for direction. And the Scripture says that the Lord answered him. Under the New Covenant, we know that Yeshua is the Mediator between God and man, and he is our High Priest. With that being said, there is no need for the ephod under the New Covenant. It is through Yeshua that we now have direct access to God the Father, and can come boldly to His throne of grace, to ask for mercy in the time of need. Lastly, we as New Testament believers seek the Lord through the reading of the Scriptures, because it is through the Scriptures that we learn the heart and mind of God, in other words, the revealed will of God. When we pray, it is a means of seeking God for instruction and direction, and for asking Him for what we need, to name a few.
