I would say that humility is necessary when dealing with God because God is infinitely greater in every respect than any human being.

A proud person (that is, one who by virtue of his pride does not possess humility) is thus incapable of relating to God because, in the same way that he looks down on other people (which, on a human level, will cause those people to dislike him), he also refuses to acknowledge God's superiority, and thus (as noted in the verse cited in the question) does not believe that he has any need to be guided by anyone or anything, or that even God has anything to teach him.

(He may address God in an outwardly pious manner, as the Pharisee did in Jesus' parable of the Pharisee and the publican (Luke 18:9-14), but his heart is filled with pride in himself, rather than with genuine devotion and submission to God.)

This is the same frame of mind (exemplified in Isaiah 14:13-14) that caused the devil (who was originally an angel) to rebel against God, and to be cast out of heaven and transformed into Satan.

Many people think that, in order to be humble, they must possess a low opinion of themselves, but that is not what humility means. I like the way that C. S. Lewis put it when he said that humility does not mean thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.

Lewis also said, "Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call 'humble' nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, smarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. If you do dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.”

Psalm 25:9: The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.

As the scriptures reveal to us, we need to discern how to walk in humbleness, for the Spirit of the Lord God will then help us in our weakness, knowing what we go through at times. The Spirit of the Lord God shall then make intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered. God the Father shall then search our hearts and know what the mind of the Spirit that maketh intercession for us according to the will of God. (Rom 8:26-27) Lord Jesus was and is the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world. The Spirit that descended on our Lord Jesus when He went to John, who was baptizing at the river Jordan, saw the Spirit descending on Him, and it is He who shall then baptize you with the Holy Ghost. (John 1:29-33) Lord Jesus then leads the humble, knowing their sinful nature in them, to have the humbleness to pray to the Lord God. For the Holy Spirit then maketh intercession for us according to the will of God.

One needs to have the right spirit of humbleness to discern today, as you are led by the Spirit of God, for the Spirit of the Lord then leads you and guides you, knowing the sinful nature in you. Lord Jesus needed to go through Sa-ma’-ri-a and sat on the well of Jacob. A woman from Sa-ma’-ri-a came to the well to draw water, and Lord Jesus said, "Give me to drink.” The Samaritan woman was then given to draw water out of the wells of salvation, which was springing up in her, who left her waterpot and came to the city, to the men. She then said, “Come, see a Man, who told me all things that I have done, is this not the Mes-si’-as the Christ?” Many of the Sa-mar’-i-tans of that city who came were given the living water, which was a well of water springing up into everlasting life in them, through humbleness, that He was and is the Christ, the Saviour of the world. (John 4:4,6,25,28-30,39,42/Isa 12:3)

Today, one who is led to have the right spirit of humbleness in them, there is nothing from without a man that entering into him can defile him. For it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly and goeth out into the draught purging all meats. The things that proceed out of their mouth cometh forth from the heart; those are the words that defile a man. (Mat 15:18/Mark 7:18-19) One who is led, to let it go out of the belly into the draught purging all meats, the Spirit of the Lord shall then rest upon him, giving him the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, and might, then having the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. (Isa 11:2) For all the paths of the Lord are “mercy and truth” unto such as thee, “who keep the secret of the Lord with them with fear.” The “Lord shall then show thee His covenant,” for the ones who have kept His covenant and His testimonies in him. (Psalm 25:10,12,14)

John 4:14: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
