Beautiful question, Bill! These Beatitudes are found in Mt 5:3-12 and Lk 6:20-23 (24-26).

1. Blessed are the poor in spirit (Matthew 5:3)
You’re blessed when you know your deep need for God and depend wholly on His grace.

Cross references:

Isaiah 57:15 – God dwells with the contrite and lowly in spirit. Isaiah 57:15 says,
“For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”

2 Chronicles 7:14 – God honors humility and repentance. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says,
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

2. Blessed are those who mourn (Matthew 5:4)
When you grieve over sin and the brokenness in this world, your tears matter to God—and He will comfort you. I have found that God wipes all tears from my eyes (after I accepted Jesus as my Savior).
