What is commanded of believers?

I.e. what is commanded of Christians, other than praying and worshipping God?

First, I would say that commands given to Christians are not meant as part of a works-based system to earn God's favor through obedience. We are saved entirely by grace through faith in Christ alone. The obedience of Christians arises from love and gratitude toward God for that salvation, and not from a fear of punishment.

However, following salvation, God's moral commandments in both the Old and New Testaments (as distinct from the ceremonial and civil law that applied only to biblical Israel) continue to provide sound guidance as to how followers of Christ should act toward God and others. As Jesus said, those commandments can all be encompassed in the two great commandments of loving God with all our being, and loving our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-40).

The gospels also refer to Jesus commanding those who follow Him to humbly serve one another (John 13:14) -- just as He had come not to be served, but to serve (Matthew 20:28) -- and to love one another as He had loved them (John 15:12).

As believers we have been commanded to love. If we love God we will keep/obey His commandments and we will love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Love is the fulfillment of the law. Thank the Lord for His Amazing Grace!

You shall have no other gods before me.

You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

You shall not murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Exodus 20:1-17

I would just like to add a few commands from the Epistle to the Hebrews:

1. Have confidence in God (Hebrews 10:35)

2. Come boldly to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16; 10:19-23)

3. Don't be slothful (Hebrews 6:12)

4. Don't forsake assembling together for worship (Hebrews 10:25)

5. Exhort one another (Hebrews 10:25)

6. Lay aside every weight (Hebrews 12:1)

7. Run with patience the race before us (Hebrews 12:1)

8. Look to Jesus (Hebrews 12:2)

9. Strengthen feeble knees (Hebrews 12:12)

10. Be content with what you have (Hebrews 13:5)

11. Don't be influenced by strange doctrines (Hebrews 13:9)
