In my opinion, the psalmist is speaking in the cited verse (and also in the psalm as a whole) of his confidence in God's protection of His followers in this world and life, as well as of the way in which He will deal in an adverse temporal manner with those who seek to harm those followers, rather than referring to anything related to what the believer may see or experience after temporal death.

At the same time, however, this assurance is not to be used as a basis for deliberately taking unnecessary risks. In fact, in Matthew 4:2-7, Satan quoted Psalm 91:11-12 to Jesus in tempting Him to throw Himself from the top of the temple in Jerusalem, so that (as stated in the psalm) God would send angels to save Him, in response to which Jesus likewise quoted Scripture (Deuteronomy 6:16) in which Moses indicated that God was not to be put to such a test.

✿ Snares are generally used of traps set to destroy the righteous men by the wicked men with direct or indirect influences of fallen angels and demons.

✿ Many pestilences seem to attack in the night; other calamities come in the day. Regardless of what they are and when they come, the believer may, by dwelling in the secret place of the Most High, have 1,000 fall on his left side and 10,000 on his right without any coming near him. The only thing he may see is the result of plagues on the wicked (Ps. 91:5-8). 

Here David put his confidence that the plagues slaying thousands all around you will not come near you and how the wicked men who plot to kill us be punished (Ps. 91:7-8).

❶ Not afraid of night terrors.
❷ Not afraid of day arrows.
❸ Not afraid of pestilences (Ps. 91:6).
❹ Not afraid of noonday destructions.
❺ Though 1,000 fall at your left hand and 10,000 at your right, the destroyer does not come near you (Ps. 91:7).
❻ You see the wicked “punished” (Ps. 91:8).

Psalm 91 is a presentation of the coming of the Lord, when the righteous are assured of God's love and protection. 

Four names for divinity are used in Psalm 91:1-2 Most High; Almighty; the LORD; God - two of these names are repeated Psalm 91:9 signifying that the entire power of divinity is on the side of the righteous and no one should fear the future. 

Interestingly, this psalm was quoted in part by Satan when he tempted Jesus (Ps 91:11-13; Matt 4:6; Mark 1:13; Luke 4:10, 11.) Jesus knew that His total reliance upon His Father was all He needed to keep Him from falling.

Psalm 91:4-8 is leading us through the last persecution of God’s people that ends in the falling of the seven plagues (Rev 7:1-3) when the angels let go of the four winds. 

Once this phase of God’s judgment has been completed and the pronouncement of judgment has been issued (Rev 22:11-12), the plagues will fall upon the earth and the punishments of the wicked are set in motion (Rev 16). 

These plagues will fall prior to the coming of Christ but only the righteousness will be protected (Ps 91:4-8), just as when the last seven plagues that fell on Egypt, but God’s people were shielded from these plagues (Ex 7-12).
