Since the genealogy in Genesis 5 in which Enoch appears plainly says that all the other individuals spoken of in the genealogy (except for Enoch) died, the statement that God "took" Enoch is meant to indicate that Enoch was translated directly into heaven without having to die, similar to what later happened with Elijah (although the account of Enoch being taken does not contain as much detail as was the case with Elijah (2 Kings 2:9-12)). 

Enoch's translation is later corroborated by a reference in Hebrews 11:5 in the New Testament, which specifically says that Enoch was "taken up so that he should not see death."

The answer to did Enoch escape death is really a yes and no answer. It is appointed unto all of mankind to die and then the judgment. Hebrews 9:27

He escaped death for a time, but he will see death after his mission is fulfilled to witness to Israel, the Jewish nation, during the tribulation that Jesus Christ was and is their salvation. During the tribulation he and Elijah will witness, die and be raised from the dead. Revelations 11: 1-14

Enoch and Elijah are God's next attempt to save a remnant of his chosen people, who gave us the roots of our Christian religion and our precious savior. Revelation 11:1-14
