Godly sorrow leads to a change. It has nothing to do with the free gift of eternal life. It has to do with the chastening of the Lord and a loss of rewards in heaven.

Salvation is a free gift from God by a one time faith alone in Jesus alone apart from any works.

But our rewards in heaven are based on what we do after we have received the free gift of eternal life. John 3:18. We can be chastened by the Lord, First Corinthians 5:5, but we cannot lose eternal life. Romans 6:23 The GIFT of God is eternal life. Not a reward for good behavior, but a free GIFT. Paid in full. No longer condemned.

Colossians 3:5-6 The wrath of God comes on the sons, believers, of disobedience. Saved people who are living in sin that God hates. He died for our sins so we could never be condemned again, so when we live in sin He chastens us as children. John 1:12.

Hebrew 13:5 He will never leave us or forsake us. He will never cast us out. But He may take our life early. First Corinthians 5:5
