In my perspective when reading this, it seems he is saying that boasting and bragging about ourselves cuts us off from hearing God's true knowledge. If we quit listening, we will stray.

Somewhat confusingly, although the passage included with the above question is Proverbs 27:1-27, the actual verse quoted in the question itself is Proverbs 19:27.

If Proverbs 19:27 is actually the verse about which the questioner is asking, I would say that the verse's wording concerns someone (particularly a young person, as indicated by the fact that the writer addresses him as "son") who has been affected by pride to the extent that he believes that he does not need instruction or advice from others (and, particularly, from others who have had more life experience, and have thus been able to acquire more true wisdom -- which is not necessarily the same as mere intellectual knowledge).

This predisposition increases the chance that the person will make decisions and take actions that are not only wrong from a practical standpoint with respect to human knowledge or learning, but also (and more importantly) foolish, in that they fail to address whether they are in accordance with the way in which God would have him act (since a proper relationship to God requires an attitude of humility and a willingness to learn, both of which a proud person lacks).
