The image of the cross signifies death. (Even today, in written synopses of people's lives, the image of the cross placed next to a date indicates that it was the date on which the person died.) It was on the cross that Jesus suffered and died in bearing God's punishment for the sins of humanity from eternity past to eternity future. But Jesus' subsequent resurrection transformed His death to the means by which all who place their faith in it (rather than in their own imperfect righteousness) to atone for their sins can receive forgiveness of those sins and eternal life.
