They were to serve before the LORD regularly in the proper number and in the way prescribed for them. 32And so the Levites carried out their responsibilities for the tent of meeting, for the Holy Place and, under their relatives the descendants of Aaron, for the service of the temple of the LORD.

I would say that the question is basically answered by the passage cited in the question itself. The Levites did not lead worship services (which was a duty reserved for Aaron's direct descendants), but were responsible for the day-to-day functions of maintaining the Tabernacle (and, later, the Temple), as well as ritually purifying and otherwise managing the supplies and implements used in worship services. As a group, they thanked and praised God every morning and evening, as well as at the times of sacrificial offerings on the Sabbath, and also at the feasts and festivals that God had appointed. They also acted as teachers of God's Law and as judges (Deuteronomy 17:8-13; Deuteronomy 33:10).
