Why did the daughters claim a right to land? (Joshua 17:3-4)-- 3 But (H)Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 4 And they came near before (I)Eleazar the priest, before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the rulers, saying, (J)“The Lord commanded Moses to give us an [b]inheritance among our brothers.” Therefore, according to the commandment of the Lord, he gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers.

As noted in Joshua 17:4, the daughters of Zelophehad were "following up" on the request that they had previously made of Moses (when he had still been alive) regarding this situation (Numbers 27:1-11), and seeking the implementation of the ruling that God Himself had provided at that earlier time. When Moses inquired of God at that time about the situation with Zelophehad's daughters, God said that, in the absence of a male heir (as was the case with Zelophehad), a man's inheritance was to pass to his daughters. In addition, God also at that time provided rules to be followed when a man died with no son, or with no children at all, and also with no brothers, as well as no uncles on his father's side.
