What is the steward saying in this verse: "For my master has taken the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg"?
Is this a form of pride? Or something else?
Luke 16:3
ESV - 3 And the manager said to himself, 'What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.

I would say that, as Jesus indicated in Luke 16:8, both the steward in the parable, as well as his master, were thinking along the lines of "the sons of this world" rather than "the sons of light". Therefore, it would have been "natural" for the steward to exhibit pride (rather than humility) and to be primarily concerned about his own self-interest (rather than wanting to atone for the charges that had been brought against him); and also for the master to commend the steward for the worldly shrewdness of his actions (even though those actions, as Jesus noted, had been dishonest, and had cost the master money).
