What does it mean to have "assured salvation"?

1 John 5:11 - 13

ESV - 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Another definition for assured is guarantee, certain or secure. John 5:24 says salvation takes us out of death into life.Jude 1:24 says we are kept from stumbling and seen as blameless.Hebrews 7:25 says Jesus lives so we are saved forever. Then Ephesians 4:30 states who the Assurer is the Holy Spirit who seals us.

God has provided all: salvation, sanctification, and security through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

God does not want salvation for Christians to be a matter of doubt, which would be the case if being saved depended on our own works. We would never be able to be sure that we were "good enough", or had done everything that we needed to do, especially in comparison to God's absolute holiness and moral perfection.

That is why salvation is through Christ -- the only One who has ever succeeded in living a sinless life. As long as we are depending totally on faith in the redemption that He died and rose again to provide (and not on anything that we have done or can do), we are assured (that is, we can be certain) of the salvation and eternal life that He obtained for us.

It was to underscore the assurance that faith in Christ provides that the apostle John (in verse 13 of the passage cited in the question) said, "I write this to you that you may KNOW [emphasis added] that you have eternal life."

For God so loved the world, (everybody) that HE gave His only begotten Son, (Jesus) that WHOSOEVER, (anybody) believeth in Him, will not perish but HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. Jesus said it, I believe it, and that settles it.

John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me, will come to me, and All that come to me I will in no wise cast out. John 6:39 Jesus has never lost one. John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace ye are saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, (we did nothing for it) it is the GIFT of God, not of works, (what we do or not do) lest any man should boast. We can only boast in the cross where Jesus paid our sin debt in full.

We can only receive from God, we have nothing to offer Him for salvation.

First Corinthians 15:1-4 That Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures, that He was buried and rose again on the third day, according to the scriptures. If you believe He did it for you, you are saved and have eternal life given through the Spirit of God.
