To me, the thought that Paul is expressing here (as he did elsewhere in his epistles (such as in 1 Corinthians 9:3-14), and as Jesus also said in Matthew 10:9-10) is that those who instruct others in the faith deserve material compensation for their work from those whom they teach or serve.
