The old testament deals with a very different culture than the one we live in so in my opinion this must be considered in this question. Also, Proverbs deals with wisdom not commands. The Bible also teaches us to love our neighbor as ourself. Therefore, if we have the means and willingness to pay the loan there is no reason we should not cosign a loan. In my opinion, though, we should never do so unless we are 100 percent willing and able to make the payments if we need to WITHOUT any resentment should this be needed. Resentment could damage our Christian witness. Not making the payments could do so even more. So the biblical wisdom is still applicable without banning the practice.
