Why would God want to put Moses to death?

I understand the importance of the covenant of circumcision between God and Moses and all the males from that generation on, but it doesn't make sense that Moses was saved from being thrown into the Nile river, saved by Pharaoh's daughter, commissioned by God to free His people from bondage, then on the way to Egypt to do what God called him to do, Zipporah had to step in to save Moses from being struck down by God for not circumcising his sons. Can someone please help me to understand this?

Exodus 4:24

ESV - 24 At a lodging place on the way the Lord met him and sought to put him to death.
