The word unction is only found one time in the King James Bible.

1John 2:20 ¶ But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

It’s in regard to the understanding given by the Holy One concerning the humanity of Jesus.

Unction is translated as anointing in some newer Bible translations.

The unction, or anointing, of the Holy One helps us understand that Jesus, as the Son of God, was also the Son of Man and as the Son of Man he was indeed tempted in all points like as we, Heb. 4:15, and felt what we feel, etc.

The phrase "Son of Man" is in the 4 Gospels 80 times while the phrase "Son of God" is mentioned only 28 times. It seems clear that Jesus, along with the Holy Spirit, wanted to make sure that we understand that he was "one of us."

If we bought into the antichrist doctrine that Jesus was not fully human, not fully like us, then we’d be an easy prey for the thought that we can't be like Jesus because he wasn’t like us.
If he wasn't fully like us, how could God expect us to be like Him, etc...

There’s a lot of mystery about how this process of us becoming Christlike will occur.
1John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Rom. 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Rom. 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

But, it starts with becoming like a little child.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Mark 10:14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
Mark 10:15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

The unction, or anointing, of the Holy One is not only helpful, it’s indeed necessary for us to become true children of God and understand that as Jesus became one of us, we too can be changed and become one of them...

To reduce the unction, or anointing, of the Holy One to something physical, like olive oil, is seriously limiting the power that God wants his people to have on their side.

A thought from a little girl studying 1 Cor. 13.
Human love teaches us how to be goodly.
God's love, charity, teaches us how to be Godly.
