The speaker at the beginning of Acts 1 is Luke, the Hellenic Jewish Christian physician who joined the apostle Paul in his travels at Troas during Paul's second missionary journey (as indicated by Acts 16:11, when the narrative of the book of Acts shifts from the third person to the first person, and by Paul's references to being accompanied by Luke in passages such as Philemon 24, Colossians 4:14 (where Paul called him "the beloved physician") and 2 Timothy 4:11 (where Paul described Luke as being his only companion during his imprisonment in Rome)). The wording at the beginning of Acts 1, by its similarity to Luke 1:1-4, also indicates Luke as being the author of the gospel that bears his name, which he wrote prior to composing the book of Acts (as indicated in Acts 1:1).
