Simon, or Simeon (Mark 1:16; Acts 15:14), was Peter's birth name. (He is also referred to or identified as Simon bar Jonah (meaning "Simon, the son of Jonah")(Matthew 16:17), which is a patronymic form in reference to who his father was; and as Simon Peter (Matthew 16:16), combining his birth name with the name given to him by Jesus.)

He was given the name "Peter" (or "Cephas") (from the Greek and Aramaic words, respectively, for "rock") by Jesus in recognition or foreknowledge of being the first of the apostles to acknowledge or confess Jesus as the Messiah (or Christ) and the Son of God (Matthew 16:13-19; John 1:42), which Jesus said was not knowledge that Peter had acquired through his own effort or from other people, but was a revelation that Peter had received from God the Father.

By giving Peter this name, Jesus was saying that confession of His identity as the Messiah and the Son of God would be the foundational principle (or the "rock") upon which He would build His church.

Peter was first known as “Simon bar Jonas” as name assigned to him by his father as was the Jewish custom. “Simon”, his first name means “He has heard”. The last name “son of Jonas”, identifies the name of his father, his family name or surname. 

In answer to the question (v15) “Who do you say I am?” (v16) “Simon Peter [Greek Petros] answered and said ‘You are the Christ [ho christos, the Anointed], the Son of the living God [“Theou”, Hebrew ALHYM]. (v17) Jesus [iEsous] answered and said to him, “Blessed are you Simon Bar-Jonas, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. (18) And I also say to you that you are Peter [Petros] and on this rock [te Petra, The Rock] I will build [oikodomEsO] My Church [ tEn ekklesian] ” The Greek words are in brackets.

“PETROS” means “a pebble or slither of a piece of rock.” 

“Te Petra”, The Rock always refers to The Almighty YHVH ALHYM (Ge 2:4 Hebrew) or Christ (1 Cor 10:4), not Petros. 

"Peter" means “Father” and originates from the ancient proto Indo-European name “Dyeus-Peter” (a name of Lucifer who became Satan) which means “Shining Sky- Father.” Lucifer’s is identified in Isaiah 14:12- 21 and Ezekiel 28:11-19 who tried a coup detat in heaven and is known as Satan (adversary or usurper), or Devil. 

A proper noun never needs to be translated, and yet Petros has been translated to Peter. Why?

I think that this is to justify the Pope’s title as “Holy Father” or “Holy Papa” and its priests being addressed as “Father” in direct contradiction of Christ’s command to call no man “Father” on earth (Mat 23:9). This usurps our Heavenly ALHYM (Gen 1:1 Hebrew) Father’s role in our lives through His Son (Eph 3: 14-15). As His adopted sons (and daughters) disciples of Christ will naturally call Him ABBA, DADDY (Ro 8:15; Gal 4:6; 2 Cor 6:17) as members of His home (Eph 2:19-22; Heb 3:6).
