God calls us saints because we are washed by the blood of the lamb. We are not saints because we are saintly; We are saints, so we should walk saintly. When Christ was hanging on the Cross between two thieves, between Heaven and earth, between God and man, He paid the penalty for "all" our sins — sins of the past, present and future. No more sacrifice. Our sins are so remitted as if they were never committed. Total justification! If we sin today we have Christ advocating for us before the Father. But we are to walk in the light. That is, we must walk in all openness and transparency before God, acknowledging our sinfulness. The blood of the Lamb of God will "keep cleansing" us. Like a perennial river running over the pebbles we are under the cleansing stream of Immanuel's blood (1 Jn 1:7; 2:1). Our sins of omission are more in number than those of commission. Never a moment can we afford to be outside the Blood! There are more prisoners outside than inside prisons. Prisoners of guilt! The Gospel rings forgiveness and freedom! All guilt melts away like snow before the Son! Sins confessed are sins forgiven; sins forgiven are sins forgotten — forever! The word "atonement" is used 80 times in the Old Testament and only 1 Time in the New Testament. The word "blood" is used 329 times in the Old Testament and 101 Times in the New Testament. Almost all things were ceremonially purged with water and fire under the law(Num. 31:23) and some with the ashes of a red heifer (Num. 19:2-10), but ALL were first consecrated by blood. Ceremonially purged (Heb. 9:13), not purged from sin (Heb. 10:4). Under the new covenant, Here Paul shows that there can be no redemption except through the blood of Christ; and to prefigure this the law could not grant any remission of sin without the blood of a victim. "Washed in the blood" is a popular metaphor for what happens when an individual is saved through faith in Christ. Jesus was totally without sin. When He was scourged and crucified, the blood that He shed in the process became the all-sufficient atonement (or payment) for all time of humanity's sins -- a sacrifice that had been foreshadowed since Old Testament times by the system of offerings commanded by God (as in Leviticus 2-7, for example) involving the shedding of the blood of innocent animals that were without spot, blemish, or defect, to allow Him to forgive the sins of the people, since only the forfeiture of life through the shedding of blood was sufficient to pay the penalty demanded by God for the seriousness in His eyes of even the slightest departure from the holiness, or sinless perfection, that He demands of people (Hebrews 9:22). The imagery of being "washed in the blood" is one not just of contact with Christ's blood, but of total immersion in it, to portray the necessity of being completely cleansed of the effects of sin through faith in Christ's sacrifice, which He willingly underwent to make forgiveness, redemption, and eternal life possible for an otherwise lost humanity.

Washed in Blood? To us who know we need it, this is a precious thought. But for those not-yet-Christians it is at least strange, if not sadistic. In our world of war, most people appreciate someone giving their life to defend another. So, Jesus, by shedding His blood, did for His people. His blood is human, not magic. But its value is in His worth. ISIS would rather kill a General than a Private, even better a President. Their status adds value to the kill. So, the sinless, heaven sent, God-man, has eternal status and influence. Hebrew priests entered God’s presence with blood – the atoning price for the sin of their nation. Our Great High Priest enters heaven on our behalf because His cross-work removed our sin - past, present, and future. He belongs there, we don’t! But we are welcomed through His blood. Atonement, Propitiation, Ransom, Deliverance, Freedom, Confidence….!
