First of all we should not be hypocritical in judging someone while our own lives are in a mess.
Matthew 7:3-5 (KJV) And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
Romans 2:1 (KJV) Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
Secondly we should not pre judge anyone by the way it looks.
John 7:24 (KJV) Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
Matthew 7:16-18 (KJV) Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

I think that Paul addresses this in 1 Corinthians 5:1-13, where he says that if someone claiming to be a Christian is openly and unrepentingly engaging in sinful activities -- with Paul mentioning specifically such acts as immorality (such as the man described by Paul who was living conjugally with his own stepmother), greed, idolatry, drunkenness, or robbery -- then they are to be expelled from Christian fellowship.

What makes judgment acceptable in those cases is the fact that the person being expelled claims to be a Christian, and yet is openly sinning and not repenting. As Paul indicated in the same passage, this guidance does not apply to non-believers who are still "in the world", since God will judge them, and Christians are to seek to evangelize and convert them to faith in Christ, so that they may be saved, rather than to avoid them, because (as Paul said) avoiding them would mean having to go out of the world.
