In order to get "right" with God, we must first understand what is "wrong." The answer is sin. "There is no one who does good, not even one" (Psalm 14:3). We have rebelled against God's commands; w...

There is only one way to get right with God. That is to trust in what Jesus did on the cross for you by paying the price for all of your sin, past, present, and future. Living a holy life will not save you. Trusting in yourself to make yourself righteous will not save you.

Quitting sin will not save you. Good works will not save you. It is by faith alone without works, good or bad. Otherwise you could earn your salvation. There is nothing else to do. Jesus paid the price to set you free from the old law of sin and death.

Salvation is totally by grace through faith without works of righteousness which we have done. Our faith in what Jesus did on the cross for us is what pleases God the most. By that same thing, when we begin to trust in our selves to make our selves righteous, it is displeasing to God. We are trusting in something else rather than Jesus alone by faith.

We should do good works because of what Jesus has already done for us on the cross, but that is not what saves us. Salvation is a free gift and cannot be earned. What pleases God most is to trust in His son.

To be right with God means to be righteous. If we disobey God, refuse to agree with Him, and seek to challenge Him, then are pretty not right with Him. For to be right with God is to agree to whatever He asks of you. Whether it seems acceptable in the public eye or not. Abraham (Gen 15:6), (Rom 4), and Noah (Gen 7:1) were counted to be righteous because they never opposed God every time He asked them to do something. No matter how impossible and weird in the human eye it looked to be. God asked Isaiah to walk naked and barefooted for three years (Isa 20:2). For you have to understand that the fact it is God telling you to do it, then it is possible and well intentioned. For God knows exactly what He wants out of whatever He asks of you, because He is Omnipresent, Omniscient, and Omnipotent.

God is never predictable. He does what and when He wishes. For He forgives when you expect Him not to. He loves when you expect not to. For He is not like man who is influenced by anything and everything. Once you understand that God is not limited by the scope of the human little brain, neither is there any other factor that can limit Him in anyway, then you are on the way to getting right with God.

Adam and Eve had been right with God until when they disobeyed Him (Gen 3:6). It was then that they lost their right of righteousness. Being the first man on earth, ever since then, we all share in Adam's disobedience to God because we are his offspring (Rom 3:23). It is on this account that God the Father sought to provide a way to reunite us to Himself by way of offering His Son Jesus Christ for the remission of the human sin.

Now, there are steps any human who loves and intends to be right with God must take:

Accept Jesus Christ.
Live a transformed life
Obey God

Accept Jesus Christ.
If you are already Born Again, you have already taken a very precious step. For there is no life neither is there any little hope besides Christ. Once in Christ, and Him in us (in every meaning of it), it is automatic that we are counted righteous (Col 1:22), (John 3:16), (John 11:25-26). For to accept and believe in Christ is to do so to God. For God the Father is in Jesus and so is Jesus in God the Father. Thus, the very first sure way to get right with God, is one to allow and accept Christ into their lives and equally submit to His Lordship. Thus, for anybody who is yet to confess Christ, you better do so, for that is the only sure way.

Live a transformed life
When we have confessed Christ as Lord and Savior, it must not only be so, but it must equally be felt and seen in how we conduct ourselves. People can only tell a change in us by what they see (Mat 7:15-20). Scripture tells us to pursue righteousness, for only by it, can people tell we are for God (2Tim 2:22), (1Tim 6:11), (Isaiah 51:1). We ought to forsake all our former bad ways.

Obey God
It is paramount that we always obey God every time He tells us to do anything. Every time God tells us to do anything, the answer should be YES SIR. Our misunderstanding of God stems from the fact that we tend to doubt Him, we are tempted to think that He can't measure up. Up to date, many people have no definitive picture of what exactly Jesus is. When we say He is the Son of God and God incarnate, we cause an uproar. For it is not easy to understand this when I use my little human brain, and yet when I submit to God so I can understand better, it pretty gets much easier.

For it is very important that we pray, fast read the Bible, congregate with the brethren, but these aren't the reasons we are counted to be right with God. To be right with God is to follow in whatever He tells you to do. It may be none of the above, but the fact that it is God saying so, it surely is very well intentioned. But it is also pretty important that we do understand that it is never by ourselves that we can achieve anything, for Jesus wouldn't have come. It is only by the grace of God that we can go miles (Philippians 4:13)

I can only share my understanding of scripture, what I know of my Lord God, and my own walk with Him these past 2+ years.

To be right with God, you have to believe in Him, obey Him, love Him, acknowledge Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, repent of your sins for which He was sacrificed, believe that He is alive today as He was yesterday and always will be, and follow Him giving Him all the glory:

John 7:18: He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

Romans 10:9: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

1 Corinthians 10:31: Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

To be right with God you have to love Him and trust in Him and His will for you, and pray to Him regularly:

1 Thessalonians 5:17: Pray without ceasing.

Matthew 26:39: And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

To be right with God you must forgive others, and not judge them.

Mark 11:26: But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Luke 6:37: Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

To be right with God, you have to stop willfully sinning which is actively choosing to sin i.e. being adulterous, stealing, lying, getting angry, even smoking cigarettes, etc. When you do sin, as you will for we are sinful creatures, you need to repent of those sins before God, consciously and actively and keep trying not to sin anymore.

Hebrews 10:26: For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

2 Corinthians 17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

John 5:14: Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

To be right with God, you have to lay aside all earthly things that stop you from endurance in Him:

Hebrews 12: Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

To be right with God, you have to believe in Him and Him alone, and faithfully follow without exception the two commandments that Jesus gave us:

Mark 12:29: And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: 30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

To be right with God, you have to spread the Gospel, by testifying and by example:

Mark 1:17: And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

Matthew 5:19: Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Do all these things, willingly, and I do believe you will be 'right' with our Lord God.

Blessings,
in HIM,
Lynn

According to Romans 3:23, sin is plainly disobeying God. One of the most important words for sin in the New Testament is the Greek word "hamartia --ἁμαρτία," which originally meant “to miss the mark.” It was first used to describe archers whose arrows missed the target. Since God is sinless (Mt 5:48), He can not stand sin, or people with sin (every one of us).--Habakkuk 1:13a; Psalm 5:5. But he says that we have to be perfect. -- Mt 5:48 again. "Be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect." The problem is that we can not be perfect, it is impossible.

What makes this worse is that there is a divine penalty for our sin, death (Romans 6:23a says, "The wages of sin is death. I think of it like this. I wear glasses so the first thing I do in the morning when I get up is put my glasses on. Then everything comes into much sharper focus. That's what the seriousness of sin is all about; it comes into its sharpest focus when we realize we're doomed; it's crystal clear.

That's when Jesus Christ comes into the picture. He was perfect; He never sinned (Heb 4:15). So he did not have to die for his sin (he had none). But he chose to die for our sin because he loved us so (John 3:16, "For God SO loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have everylastng life. I like to personalize this: "God So loved Jack, that he gave his only begotten Son, that if Jack believes in Him, Jack should not perish, but that Jack would have everlasting life." You can put your own name in there for "the world"!

I like and refer others to one of my favorite gifs: http://www.clarifyingchristianity.com/images/theway.gif

And finally, according to "Getting Right with God" (online article):

Repent of your sins. (See Acts 17:30,31.)

What does “repent” mean? Well, imagine that you were going to the store when you realized that you forgot your money. What would you do? You would probably be disappointed that you wasted so much time, but you would still turn around and go home to get your money. Repentance is like that. A repentant person simply says, “God, I behaved badly in my past, and I want to turn around and live the way that You want me to live from now on.” You can talk to God like you would talk to a respected friend and repent of any sin that has been a part of your life.

Do this and you'll be right with God!
