Humans have not only mental memories, but also sensual memories. We recall not only facts, but also sights, sounds, tastes, touches, and smells. And along with each of those types of memories, we have a host of thoughts or reactions that they evoke in us, based on experiences that we have had with which we associate them. We may not even realize that such memories are present until being exposed to a specific stimulus brings those events back to us with full clarity, even though they might have occurred in the distant past.

Since humans were created in God's image, this same characteristic is also apparently true of God, as well. The offering of burnt sacrifices that God commanded in the Old Testament produced an aroma that evoked in God a recollection of a prior occasion -- specifically (I would say) of the sacrifices that Noah had made after leaving the ark following the flood (Genesis 8:20-22), when God in mercy promised that He would never again send such destruction on the earth.

Before the Law was written, Job made offerings to the Lord, who referred to Job as, "perfect in all his ways." Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his most precious son in obedience to the Lord and was called, "G-d's friend." Since we are told to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, pleasing unto the Lord, I imagine each of us is a pleasing aroma, which is reflected in our prayers, worship and unselfish deeds. We remind the Lord of each of us, the same way that unexpectedly hearing a song brings back happy memories to us of a person we were with at the time we first heard it. 

I used to sing to the Lord every day, but due to a situation beyond my control, I began to slack off and eventually abandoned it altogether. However, after recently trying to re-kindle my relationship with Him, whom my soul loves, I woke up early this morning with a song running through my mind that I am not very familiar with, "Annie's Song" by John Denver. 

I realized that the Lord was singing that song especially to me! I felt so very humbled and grateful. 

I believe He feels that same way about each one of us. After all, he left the ninety and nine to fetch the one little lamb who strayed.
