Jesus said that even the inhabitants of wicked Sodom (which God had destroyed for its sinfulness (Genesis 19)) would receive less punishment from God in the final judgment at the end of time than the people of Capernaum, for Sodom had not had the opportunity to witness Jesus' "mighty works" (His miracles and teaching) that Capernaum had had. And yet, in spite of the testimony of these miracles to Jesus' identity as the Messiah, Capernaum had not accepted Him and turned to God, while (according to Jesus) witnessing those same works would have caused the inhabitants of Sodom to repent and keep their city from being destroyed. Therefore, far from being commended by God (exalted to heaven), Capernaum would be brought down to Hades, and fare even worse in the final judgment than the people of Sodom.
