A fundamental Christian principle is that God is one divine, eternal Being existing in three distinct, co-equal, co-eternal Persons. In discussing the relationship between these Persons, the apostle John said in His gospel (John 1:1-3), "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made."

The Word was the pre-incarnate Christ (the Son of God and the Second Person of the Holy Trinity of Persons that comprise the one true God, along with the Father and the Holy Spirit). As the passage cited above makes clear, He Himself is God, and (since the Triune God is eternal) He has always existed.

God created the universe through Him (that is, the Divine Word spoke the universe into existence). He was not a created being, but was the means through which God began and performed His creative work.

Thus, "the beginning of the creation of God" does not mean "the first being or thing created by God," but the root source from Whom God's creative activity originated.

Other translations of this verse (as found on the website http://www.biblehub.com) clarify this point by rendering this passage through such wording as the following:

the ruler of God's creation
the Originator of God's creation
the Source of the Creation of God
the source of God's creation
the Head of God's creation
the chief of the creation of God
