We perform countless acts every day pertaining to our earthly lives based on our trust of other people, none of whom (no matter how reliable or dependable they may be) are as worthy of our trust as Jesus, because He was (and still is) not just a man, but God incarnate, which He both claimed to be, and demonstrated by performing actions that no one else had the authority or ability to do (such as forgiving sins, and controlling the forces of nature), as related in the gospels (Luke 5:17-26; Matthew 8:23-27).

Trusting Him is important because He is the only means that God has provided for obtaining the eternal life that God originally intended for humanity to have, but that was lost through the sins that all of us have committed (Acts 4:12).

In addition, we should trust Him because He spoke to us from personal knowledge of things that only He (as God) would or could have known, such as the events that occur in eternity beyond this life.

Also, we need to trust Him because following Him will cause others to oppose us, since His teachings do not conform to the opinions of the world, and, in fact, result in the anger of others from the message that all of us are sinners who cannot save ourselves by our own efforts or goodness, but who are in need of the redemption that only He can provide. Trusting Him and drawing strength from His example keep us from falling away when such trials come (as He told us they will).
