The reason why GOD does not allow Israelite's to co-exist with the Canaanites is because people are influential in nature, so when they see the Canaanites doing things which are abominable in the sight of GOD, they might get influenced and start doing the same things

For example: Say you watch an action movie, then you automatically try to imitate the actions done by the hero of that film. Or say you sit beside a naughty person, even you start to do those type of naughty things

And a true fact is that Human mind taken the bad things easily, more than good things. So prevention is always better than cure.

Bible says in Proverbs 6:27 'Can a man carry fire next to his chest
and his clothes not be burned?'. Yes we need to be careful of what we do and whom we choose as our friends.

There is also a worldly saying 'Show me your friends, I will tell you who you are'. Yes people around us play a vital role in our lives.

GOD's word is true, if we understand it by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, its really amazing. So that's why Psalms 119:1 says, 'How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.' Yes, when we lean on GOD's words our life will be as watered garden and a pleasing aroma to the LORD

Short answer:
According to what little I personally know, the Canaanites were polytheistic (many gods and goddesses) practicing fertility cults, temple orgies, bestiality and human sacrifice including that of infants. They worshipped serpents, cultic doves, immoral gods and bulls.

Head of the pantheon was El. Although a wicked and murderous tyrant El was venerated as "father of years", "father of man" and "father bull". El was considered progenitor of the other gods and father of Baal who's name is mentioned 66 times in the KJV. Anath, Astarte, and Ashera were the three goddesses of sex and war.

A theologian and ancient historian me and my wife study after stated that the Canaanites religious practices were so unimaginably, vile, wicked and ungodly open discussion wasn't possible.
He also remarked that sexually transmitted disease ran rampant in the ancient world, evidenced by much of pagan society's extremely short life span.

The Canaanites were obviously among those the Apostle Paul described in Romans 1: "God gave them up".

"Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the LORD thy God.When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land; Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? Even so will I do likewise." (Deuteronomy 12:28-30)

"Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods. What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it." (V. 31-32)
