I think of it like this: A test is usually a difficult situation that challenges you (ie. faith, character, resolve, etc.) and a temptation is something that will lead us to sin. We can have many tests in our life and not necessarily sin in them. We come out on the other side as though tried by fire, the quality of our faith, character, etc. will be evident. Jesus was tempted but did not sin. There are only two results of temptation- pass or fail, victory or sin. Tests can be a tool to strengthen us and build us up in our weak places.

A test pulls you up, while a temptation pulls you down. In terms of school, say you have a grade of 5. If you pass a test, your grade goes up to 8. If you fail a test, your grade stays at 5 with a do-better-next-time pat on the back.. If you give into a temptation, your grade goes down to 3. If you overcome a temptation, your grade stays at 5 with a job-well-done pat on the back.
