What does it mean that the wise man built his house upon a rock?

One of my supreme joys in life has been singing in church choirs. At one
time in my life I sang in two choirs, the adult choir and the youth choir
at Scottsdale Bible Church in Scottsdale, Arizona (both in the same year/s).

I love the hymn, “The Solid Rock” because it’s all about Jesus, the lover of my soul.
He alone provides the stability that I need in life. He’s my rock. Why?

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
→ Matthew 7:24-25
“...like a wise man who built his house on the rock...”
→ 1 Corinthians 10:4
“...the Rock was Christ.”

All other ground is sinking sand;
→ Matthew 7:26-27
“...foolish man who built his house on the sand...and great was the fall of it.”

All other ground is sinking sand.

Or how did this come about for me? I think the rest of the hymn lyrics offer some explanation.

Verse 1 of My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less
By Edward Mote (1834)

My hope is built on nothing less
→ Psalm 62:5-6
“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.”

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
→ Romans 5:9
“We have now been justified by his blood...”
→ Philippians 3:9
“…not having a righteousness of my own…but that which comes through faith in Christ...”

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
→ Jeremiah 17:5
“Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength...”

But wholly lean on Jesus’ Name.
→ Proverbs 3:5
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart...”
→ Acts 4:12
“There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name...by which we must be saved.”

Verse 2

When darkness veils His lovely face,
→ Psalm 18:11
“He made darkness his covering...”
→ Isaiah 45:15
“Truly, you are a God who hides himself...”

I rest on His unchanging grace;
→ Hebrews 13:8
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
→ 2 Corinthians 12:9
“My grace is sufficient for you...”

In every high and stormy gale,
→ Isaiah 25:4
“You have been a refuge from the storm...”
→ Matthew 8:24-26
“...a great storm arose...but He rebuked the winds and the sea...”

My anchor holds within the veil.
→ Hebrews 6:19
“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul...behind the curtain [veil].”

My plea to you who may not have Christ as your rock: Acts 4:12
“There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name...by which we must be saved.”

Friend, you may have built your life on many things — your career, your family, your morals, your plans, your own strength. They may seem solid now. But when the floods of suffering rise… when the winds of death beat against your soul… when you stand before the Judge of all the earth — will your foundation hold?

The truth is simple & staggering:

There is only one name under heaven by which you must be saved — Jesus.
Not Buddha. Not Muhammad. Not self-help. Not religion. Not your best efforts (which I used to trust in). Only Jesus Christ, crucified, risen, reigning — and ready to save.

If He is not your Rock, then all you’ve built will fall — not just in time, but for eternity. He alone bore the wrath you deserve. He alone rose victorious over death. He alone offers forgiveness and eternal life.
Will you trust Him now?

Call on His name — the only saving name. Turn from sin. Abandon every other hope. Believe in Him who died for you. He is the Rock that cannot be moved — not in the storm of judgment, not in the flood of death, not in the chaos of this world.
Don’t wait for the crash to realize your foundation was sand.

Come to the Rock. Come to Christ. Come now.

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” – Romans 10:13
“Whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame.” – Romans 10:11
“He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him.” – Hebrews 7:25
