These twelve individuals were people in Ephesus who had heard the Gospel from Apollos, who is first mentioned in Acts 18. Apollos correctly taught the events concerning the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, but he was apparently unaware of Christ's command after His resurrection to baptize new Christians in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19) (rather than the baptism of repentance that John the Baptist had preached to Israel in preparation for Jesus' ministry), or of the bestowing of the Holy Spirit which had occurred on Pentecost, fifty days after Christ's resurrection, and ten days after Jesus ascended to heaven. After Aquila and Priscilla (Jewish Christians from Italy whom Paul had met in Corinth, as described in Acts 18:1-3) encountered Apollos in Ephesus in Acts 18:26, they provided him with a more accurate or adequate understanding of those events, so that those whom Apollos baptized could then also receive the Holy Spirit.
