The rock according to 1 Corinthians 10:4 is Christ: "And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ." Our Lord and savior was very active in the Old Testament account. Isaiah 44:6 declares: "Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God." In this passage, "The LORD" is defined as Yehovah or Jehovah; The existing one, the proper name of the one true God. "Let it even be established, that thy name may be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee." (1 Chronicles 17:24) "Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah." (Psalms 24:10) "Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God." (Psalms 84:3) The I AM, the Rock, the first and the last, the God of Israel, blessed be his name! What a savior!

The rock to which David is referring is God Himself. The metaphor that David is using likens the strength, permanence, and protection of God to the shelter, endurance, and position of advantage that a rock affords those who utilize it to shield themselves from danger, or to obtain victory over their opponents. In times of need (or, as David says, when one's heart is faint), we need to be able to look to a resource that is greater and more enduring than both ourselves and our difficulties. David found that help and protection in God. Jesus used a similar illustration when likening the person who would heed and follow His teachings to a man who built his house on the solid foundation of a rock, which enabled the house to withstand the rain and winds of trials and persecutions (Matthew 7:24-25).

It’s always good to cry unto God in the good times and in the bad. But when we are overwhelmed with life’s troubles, we should especially cry out to God, regardless of where we are, because God is really the only source of help (Psalms 60:11 and 108:12). To a soldier, standing on a high rock or the high ground gives a strategic advantage. In a flood, a high rock provides safety from the flood. A rock gives a sure foundation for whatever we are building.
