The Book of Life will act as our judge, depending on whether our name is written in it or not. However, it is not our deeds or accomplishments that put our names there (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is solely our faith in Jesus' sinless life, atoning death, and resurrection to make us righteous in God's sight that causes our names to be entered, and allows us to spend eternity in God's presence.

Those who are not written in the Book of Life will be judged according to the record of their earthly life ("the books" mentioned in Revelation 20:12). However, those judged according to "the books" will be condemned to eternal separation from God, since no one has attained or can attain through their own efforts or on their own merits the perfect righteousness that God requires, apart from the salvation that God offers in Christ.

In the apocalyptic writings there is the conception of a book or of books, that are in God's keeping, and upon which the final judgment is to be based (Dan. 7:10; 12:1; Rev 20:12,15).

Daniel 7:10: "A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened."

Daniel 12:1: "At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people-everyone whose name is found written in the book will be delivered."

Revelation 20:12: "And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books."

Revelation 20:15: "Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire."

To be blotted out of the Book of Life is to be cut off from God's favor, to suffer an untimely death, like Moses pled when he asked to be blotted out of the Book of Life so Israel might live.

Hell is a witness to the righteous character of God. He must judge sin. Hell is also a witness to man’s responsibility, the fact that he is not a robot or a helpless victim, but a creature able to make choices. God does not “send people to hell”; they send themselves by rejecting the Savior (Matt. 25:41; John 3:16–21). Hell is also a witness to the awfulness of sin. If we once saw sin as God sees it, we would understand why a place such as hell exists.
