Being spiritually dead actually means being alienated from God. Man was created as a spiritual being, after God formed man out of dust in His own image, He breathed His spirit in the man that means the man who lived in him was of the spirit of God. Which identifies him with God.

Our spiritual man is the you in you. When this dies then you are living in carnality. How do we die spiritually? We have two beings the inner man and the outer man. The one we feed most lives and grows the one we feed less starves and dies. In Romans 8:5 it says those who live according to the carnal nature have their minds set on what their flesh desires and those living according to the spirit have their mind set on what the spirit desires. Verse ten of the same chapter says when you have the spirit of God in you, then what dies is the flesh and the spirit lives because of righteousness in Christ. When we focus much on the flesh and forget about the spiritual man in us we kill him and make the other live. At this point you are dead spiritually.

So spiritual death basically means alive in flesh and sin but without God in you. God spirit, Gods presence, Gods nature has no place In Your life. You are are completely cut off from God and you are dead. 

A spiritual dead person can be seen from the way they live and how they conduct themselves. Their life is characterized by the desires of the flesh and satisfying them. Let's feed the spiritual man in us so that we can't be walking dead spiritually. Blessings good people.

Easton’s Bible Dictionary says this: “There is a spiritual death in trespasses and sins, i.e., the death of the soul under the power of sin (Rom. 8:6; Eph. 2:1, 3; Col. 2:13).”

Ephesians 2:1 "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,"
Ephesians 2:3 "All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath."

Romans 8:6 "The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace."
Colossians 2:13 "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins" (NIV).

Resurrection is a picture of the way Jesus Christ saves lost sinners and raises them from spiritual death (John 5:24; Eph. 2:1-10). The Gospels record three such resurrections, though Jesus probably performed more. In each instance, the person raised gave evidence of life. The widow’s son began to speak (Luke 7:15), Jairus’s daughter walked and ate food, and Lazarus was loosed from the graveclothes (John 11:44). When a lost sinner is raised from the dead, you can tell it by his speech, his walk, his appetite, and his “change of clothes” (Col. 3:1ff.). You cannot hide life! 

Remember, before we were saved [I’m making an assumption here that you are already saved], you and I lived in spiritual death (Eph. 2:1-3), and, like Lazarus, our personal corruption produced an odor that was not pleasing to God. No wonder Paul wrote, “Their throat is an open sepulcher” (Rom. 3:13).

Figuratively "dead" is used to express the spiritual condition of those who are unable to attain the life of faith. They are dead in trespasses, as in Ephesians 2:1, or conversely, those who by the New Birth are delivered from sin, are said to be dead to the Law (as Colossians 2:20, Romans 7:4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

Galatians 2:19 "For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God." Etc.).

A faith that does not show its life in the practical virtues of Christianity is called dead (Jas 2:17) --

James 2:17 "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone."

James 2:20 "But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?"

James 2:26 "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."

Regarding Ephesians 2:1, the cause of this spiritual death is “trespasses and sins” (Eph. 2:1). “The wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). In the Bible, death basically means “separation,” not only physically, as the spirit separated from the body (James 2:26), but also spiritually, as the spirit separated from God (Isa. 59:2) – “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.” (NIV)

And according to Nave's Topical Index, John 5:24, one of my favorite verses that got me saved, is listed:

"Truly, truly, I [Jesus] say to you, 'He that hears my word, and believes on him that sent me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death to life.'"
