Yes it is necessary to have a choir in church and it is important because the Lord love songs of praises. Psalm 98:4-6 says make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a Psalm, with trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the Lord, the King. Heaven has a choir, a Holy choir, Lucifer was the choir director

It is not NECESSARY to have a separate choir in the church. The entire congregation singing praises to God may also be considered a choir. There is nothing in the Bible that says "Thou shall have a group of people, separated from the other worshippers, singing praises to God." What God desires from each individual is that our praise be sincere, lifting up the name of Jesus, glorifying God. Whether there is a soloist, duet, quartet, praise team, or a 100 member choir, if the singing is not from a circumcised heart, the voice is like a "sounding brass, and tinkling cymbal," (1 Corinthians 13:1) because the love of God is not the underlying basis for it.

My personal preference is to have a well-directed, well-rehearsed choir, whose members have dedicated their time and talents to lead the rest of us in songs of praise and worship. However, I have also felt the Holy Spirit's presence in churches whose congregations sing acapella, and without a separate choir.

In conclusion, it is the humility, reverence, and sincerity of heart that God requires from each individual, whether or not they are in a traditional choir, or singing alone at the kitchen sink.
