Chloe was a Corinthian matron (a married woman, especially a dignified and sober middle-aged one; or a matron may be defined as “a married woman usually marked by dignified maturity or social distinction”) and head of a Christian household. But nothing is really told about her background. Seemingly she was well-known to the Corinthians by her name, Chloe, which means “green herb,” or “verdure” which means:

1.	The greenness of growing vegetation, also vegetation itself
2.	A condition of health and vigor
In the Greek “Chloe” stands for the first green shoot of plants. Therefore, Chloe is symbolic as an emblem of fruitful grace and beauty. Paul was profiting from hospitality in her home where from some of Chloe’s household he received notice of strife (“contentions” –KJV) among this church and which he attempted to deal with in 1 Corinthians 1. This church in Corinth gave Paul much grief due to its low spirituality.

Paul writes, 
10 	“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.	
11 	For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.	
12 	Now, this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ….” Etc., etc., etc. 

You have got to hand it to these unnamed people who belonged to “the house of Chloe.” You must commend them for courage and devotion. They did not try to sweep the problems under the carpet. They were stressed out over them; they went to the right man with them, and they did not try to do it anonymously. This wasn’t the type of “cloak and dagger” affair that we frequently have in churches—activities which actually worsen the problem instead of vice versa. 

Paul as the minister who founded the Corinthian church, so most of the members, including Chloe, would have been saved through him.
