To put the words in our own terms, he was saying 'meaningless' as in it is meaningless to chase after all these worldly things to want all those Worldly possessions. Those things we can't take into heaven, so it's meaningless to strive for them and put them before God.

The scripture, vanity of vanities, is emphasising on the insignificant aspects of life, and that humans' life should be more directed to those things of values to us now and forever. In Christian teachings, vanity is considered an example of pride, one of the seven deadly sins, and also considered as a form of self-idolatry, in which one likens their self to the greatness of God for the sake of their own image, and thereby becomes separated and perhaps in time divorced from the Divine grace of God. Thus Vanity is wasteful, pride and arrogant effort to expressive a life and living. Pride refers to a foolishly and irrationally corrupt sense of one's personal value, status or accomplishments, and it is a product of praise, independent self-reflection, and a fulfilled feeling of belonging. Jeremiah 9:23, " This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches", Vanity is a characteristic determined by excessive pride in one's appearance, qualities, abilities, achievements, character or quality of being vain and conceit. Therefore the advised is as suggested in Isaiah 44:9, that "Those who fashion a graven image are all of them futile, and their precious things are of no profit; even their own witnesses fail to see or know, so that they will be put to shame.
