I’m pretty sure that the dead do not know what the living are doing. Here’s why. The dead are sleeping, they have no consciousness, Jesus was the only living human being that has ever been resurrected and ascended into heaven. Not even King David, a man after God’s own heart, was resurrected and ascended into heaven.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they will die; But the dead know nothing, And they have no more reward, For the memory of them is forgotten.

John 3:13 "No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.

Acts 2:34 "For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: 'The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, 

Acts 13:22 And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said,'I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.'

Acts 13:36 "For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption;

So if David doesn't know what the living are doing, I don't think anyone does. One exception; Jesus was the first born from the dead and he is the only person that ever lived in the flesh that was resurrected. He sits at the right hand of God, I think he can see what we are doing from there.

We will all be resurrected one day, but that’s another topic.

I think the answer to this is in the book of Luke 16:19-31. It is the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.

Lazarus died and was transported to Abrahams embrace. The rich man died also, but he went to Hades. The rich man, realizing his mistake...

Verse 16:25-31 " So he said, Father I beg you then to send Lazarus to my father's house, since I have five brothers, to give them warning so that they do not come to this place of torment too. Abraham said, They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them. The rich man replied, Ah no, father Abraham, but if someone comes to them from the dead, they will repent. Then Abraham said to him, If they will not listen to either Moses or to the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead."

I may add that we, today also have all of Paul's works to guide us. I think that the dead may have memories of their earthly life, but that they can not know what the living are doing. There is a great separation.

This has produced a big debate over the years. The indication is that to a limited point they could know what you are doing, such as looking through the barrier from Gods' area to our area. There is no statement in the Bible that points to either side on our part, but Jesus obviously can being God's Son. Ecclesiastes Chapter 9 verse 4-7 deals with this in a way that says NO. However, on the mount of transfiguration with Jesus and two from the past we have a 'Yes'.

No one is in heaven looking down on loved ones or anyone else because the bible is very clear in John 3:13: NO MAN IS IN HEAVEN, and no man ever will be until judgment day. The dead know nothing; they are asleep, awaiting the resurrection. If there is one lie in the bible, then the whole bible is a lie.
