Heman was the child of Joel and grandson of Samuel, and of the Levite group of Korah (1 Chron. 6:33; 15:17). Heman is classified "the artist" or "the performer," and was the 1st of the 3 head Levites designated to lead the vocal and instrumental music of the Tabernacle in David's time. Apparently, Heman played the cymbal (1 Chron. 25:1-6; 2 Chron. 5:12; 35:15). Heman was likewise the author of the saddest of a considerable number of Psalms (Ps. 88). It has been proposed that Heman formed it to comfort David during some melancholy season. Heman is likewise alluded to as David's "seer [prophet] in the issues of God." And as Michael alluded to, this Heman was a grandson of Samuel the prophet who went on to become King David's seer and to have 14 sons and 3 daughters. What a capable position that must have been!
