What a beautiful Psalm! This is one of my favorite portions of the Bible. This Psalm describes God's ongoing faithful and sovereign protection for His people. Believers from all ages can read this Psalm and know that God will protect us from all of the dangers of the real world unless He permits it. The last verse was a promise Old Testament saints clung to for obedience to the Law. It also promised a future Messiah that would save them from their sins if they would show faith and believe in Him as Lord and King.

I can't speak from knowledge of the original Hebrew in which the psalm was written, but it occurs to me that, in addition to the meaning that is normally associated with the word "salvation" (that is, saving or redemption in a spiritual sense), salvation can also have a non-religious connotation meaning simply "rescue" or "deliverance". So God could possibly have been saying that He would manifest Himself to the author of the psalm by the way in which in which He would "save" him in a physical (rather than a spiritual) sense, as described in the other verses of the psalm -- that is, guarding him (verse 11), shielding him from danger (verse 13), being with him in trouble (verse 15), and delivering him from all these perils (verse 15). At the same time, despite these assurances, Christians should not frivolously or needlessly expose themselves to danger, and then depend on God to rescue them. As Jesus responded in rebuking Satan when the devil told Him to throw Himself down from the top of the temple in Jerusalem because of the promise in verse 12 (which the devil even quoted), such an action would constitute putting God to the test, as Moses had warned the people of Israel not to do in Deuteronomy 6:16, which Jesus quoted to Satan, as noted in Matthew 4:5-7.
