I have personal experience with this. A teenager I know has this problem and until I learned about it and the reasons it happens I would have been wrong to have the opinion I previously had. I believe this is one of the most misunderstood conditions affecting people today and it is more common than you would think, and frankly quite horrific when you see the state of the persons flesh when they have a bad episode.

God grabbed my attention and has grown an understanding of this in me and has given me the opportunity to share the gospel with this person though the youth work my wife and I are busy with in our church.

May God grant each of us burdened with someone like this the grace to just love them no matter how many times they disappoint us. This person goes for weeks at a time, then slides back. Then a month or two then something knocks them again. Before they started to share this they did it daily, now it is not daily so that is progress.
All I pray for is that Jesus will drive their demon out and save them, free them from the self-blaming, self-destructive mindset and lead them on a life fueled with passion for Him.
The very demons quake when we pray, please pray for this person - you don't know who it is, but God knows all about it better than we can possibly imagine.
Thanks.

Jesus strictly commanded his disciples to cut off their hand or their foot if it causes them to sin (Matthew 18: 8-9); since the words of Jesus are Spirit (John 6: 63), this commandment does not have a physical meaning but a Spiritual one.

All of us are sinners, and what causes us to sin is not just our hand, foot or eye, but our whole body, spirit, soul and mind where a knowledge of good and evil we inherited as a man from Adam (Genesis 3: 22) dwells;.

In other words, self-mutilation/cutting will not be able to save the sinners but by believing (John 3: 16)and following Jesus alone (Deuteronomy 6: 5; Matthew 22: 37-40; John 14: 6-7).
