Would God ever request or ask us to leave behind someone we love?

For what reasons/in what circumstances could this happen?

Mark 10:29 - 30

ESV - 29 Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel. 30 Who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.

Yes, he does in some circumstances. The one that comes to mind most readily is that Christians are not to marry non-Christians. This is to become unequally yoked. Christians are to leave a non-Christian behind as a marriage partner, no matter how much the couple seems to be compatible in other ways.

Knowing this, it would be far better to guard one's heart against falling in love with someone who is not on the same theological page. This is accomplished by dating only men or women who confess the same Christian faith and principles. When reaching a time in life where looking for a life-partner becomes the main purpose of dating, why would someone put him/herself in a situation where such a devastating choice would need to be made?

AFTER the fact -- if a Christian does marry a non-Christian, God does not give permission for divorce, but instead tells the Christian to stay in the marriage in order to perhaps win his/her spouse's soul for Christ. However, if the non-Christian wishes to divorce, the Christian spouse is instructed to allow him/her to leave the marriage.

God has plenty to say about marriage and relationships in his word. See 1 & 3 Corinthians for what the Bible says concerning this topic.
